Our Team

Island Dental Health Centre aims to provide individuals with a comfortable and relaxing environment where we strive to exceed your expectations through professional results and our friendly staff.

We have a passion for our work and are excited to offer modern dental care, with an equal commitment to preventative, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry.

Our Services

We perform a full range of dental services, from small fillings to full smile makeovers – all in a warm and caring environment.

Bonded Fillings

Gone are the days when tooth trauma and cavities could only be treated with unsightly metal fillings. Today, modern, tooth-colored fillings made of durable resin can be bonded to your teeth for a stronger, more natural-looking effect. Composite fillings are virtually undetectable and require only a single appointment to apply.

Amalgam-Free

If you’re one of the many patients who prefer mercury-free amalgam fillings, you’ll be happy to know that Dr.Koniuk can accommodate your request. Dr.Koniuk can improve your oral health and your smile by repairing or replacing your natural teeth with amalgam-free materials. Amalgam-free options are available for many dental procedures, including fillings and crowns. And should you need more involved treatments like root canal therapy or tooth implants, we can work with you to develop a customized treatment plan that is mercury-free.

Hygiene Services

Twice-daily brushings and regular flossing are excellent for maintenance between office visits, but a healthy mouth and beautiful smile require routine general and preventative care to stay that way. Our practice offers general care that includes regular oral examinations and cleanings. Our preventative hygiene services include fluoride, professional breath control, and periodontal (gum disease) treatments designed to help you maintain your smile’s health and beauty. Keep your teeth and gums strong and disease-free. Contact our office today to schedule a cleaning or consultation.

Crowns

Crowns, or dental caps, are used for both restorative and cosmetic dentistry. Crowns can help enhance the visual appearance of discolored, chipped or otherwise traumatized teeth, and can also be used to rebuild teeth that have suffered decay, breaks, or other issues that have caused them to lose strength.

Wisdom Teeth and Teeth Extractions

In only the most extreme and necessary cases — such as when its roots are damaged beyond repair — we may extract a tooth in preparation for a restorative dentistry procedure, such as dentures or implants.

Implant Restoration

Dr.Koniuk performs dental implant restoration by attaching artificial teeth to implants anchored in the bone below the gum line. After the anchor has been surgically placed in the jawbone, excess bone and gum grow around the implant, holding it firmly in place.

Bridges

Named for the way that they “bridge” the gaps between teeth lost to trauma or decay, bridges restore your smile’s health and beauty by placing durable artificial teeth where your natural teeth are missing. If your missing teeth make you feel self-conscious, or you’re noticing problems with speaking, chewing, or other everyday tasks, ask Dr.Koniuk if a bridge may be right for you. Created and only able to be removed by your dentist, bridges offer a comfortable, semi-permanent option that can enhance your smile and improve the health of your natural teeth.

Sedation

Oral Conscious Sedation:
To relieve the very real and often debilitating anxiety associated with dental phobia, we also offer oral conscious sedation, known as sedation dentistry. Patients who feel stressed about dental work, as well as those who need multiple procedures performed in one visit, benefit from conscious sedation.

The procedure involves taking an oral sedative prior to your visit. Your vital signs and comfort level are keenly monitored throughout your visit.

Full Mouth Restoration

If you haven’t had access to the proper dental care for years — or for a lifetime — you may be suffering from worn, discolored, missing, chipped or otherwise broken teeth. Not only does this affect your self-esteem; it can also affect the way you speak and chew. But Dr. Koniuk can help with full mouth restorative treatment. By combining a variety of dental procedures and techniques including periodontal and endodontic therapy, bridges, crowns, veneers and dental implants, Dr.Koniuk can give you a beautiful, healthy smile of which you can be proud.

Non-Surgical Gum Therapy

No matter how well you care for your teeth, you may still be suffering from gum disease. Painless and slow-growing, gum disease is still a serious condition that sometimes requires aggressive treatment. After a comprehensive periodontal screening, if gum disease is present, Island Dental Health Centre may recommend non-surgical gum therapy.

Porcelain Inlays/Onlays

Well-suited for restoring weakened back teeth, and equally appropriate for restoring more visible tooth surfaces, porcelain inlays and onlays offer a strong, attractive alternative to traditional composite fillings. Typically considered for teeth that need a major portion restored, or teeth that endure heaving chewing loads, porcelain inlays and onlays offer the protection and strength of a crown without the need for extensive tooth preparation. Made from the same strong, tooth-colored material as crowns and bridges, porcelain inlays and onlays are customized to match your tooth shape and shade — and are stronger and more durable than composite restorations.

Porcelain Veneers

An excellent alternative to crowns, porcelain veneers can perfect your smile by masking stains, hiding chips, correcting misalignment, and creating uniformity. Veneers, which are made of thin, customized material, are designed to slide over the teeth, look incredibly natural, are long-lasting, and are relatively easy to apply.

TMJ (TMD) Therapy

Do you hear a popping or grating sound when you open your mouth? Are you suffering from pain when trying to open your mouth or move it from side to side?If so, you may have Tempromandibular Joint pain or Tempromandibular Dysfunction. Other common symptoms may include:

– Neck and/or shoulder pain
– Ear symptoms, including hearing loss, ringing or pain
– Clenching/grinding your teeth during sleep
– A chronic feeling of tiredness
– Ongoing headaches at your temples or above your eyes

The symptoms described above may be symptoms of TMJ, but they may also be due to another condition. That’s why it’s so important to get a proper diagnosis, so you can treat the problem accordingly. Dr.Koniuk will be happy to perform a comprehensive examination and recommend a treatment plan based on your specific symptoms and concerns. Should we determine the need to get other treatment partners involved — like chiropractors, cranio/mandibular specialists, physiotherapists or massage therapists — we can recommend potential treatment partners and can work together to relieve your symptoms.

Athletic Mouthwear

Athletes: Looking for Protection and Performance?

Whether golf is your passion, hockey is your hobby, or football is your sport of choice mouthwear can help protect your mouth while improving your performance. How? mouthwear keeps you from being able to clench your jaw or teeth while you’re practicing or in the middle of a game — which keeps your body from releasing hormones that can slow you down and undermine your performance.

Hundreds of professional athletes count on mouthwear to help protect their teeth and help them perform to their potential. And the Mouthwear is also recommended by trainers and coaches, as well as dentists! In fact, the performance-enhancing qualities of Performance Mouthwear have been discussed in peer-reviewed journals; you can read the reports about the science behind the Bite Tech technology here.

Male and Female Athletes of Any Sport Can Benefit from Mouthguards and Mouthpieces.

Which Performance Mouthwear is right for you? The answer depends on your sport of choice. If you want protection and performance enhancement for no- or low-contact sports like tennis, weightlifting, or baseball, the UnderArmour Performance Mouthpiece will give you the perfect amount of protection and performance enhancement without unnecessary bulk. For sports like football, hockey, rugby, or similar activities, UnderArmour’s Performance Mouthguard will offer you the most protection available, while simultaneously enhancing your performance.

Male and female athletes from ages 8 and up can likely benefit from UnderArmour Performance Mouthwear. However, if you’re currently wearing braces, have missing or unrepaired teeth, or have suffered from joint pain in the past, it may not be the best option for you. Talk to Dr.Koniuk if you have any concerns about whether UnderArmour Performance Mouthwear is right for you.

Fitting Your Performance Mouthwear:

Getting a customized Performance Mouthguard or Performance Mouthpiece is both quick and easy, and can be done in conjunction with another planned visit to the dentist. We’ll make impressions of your teeth (top and bottom) and will also take a bite impression to ensure an optimal fit. After getting your impressions finished, we’ll call you when your Performance Mouthwear is ready for you to pick up — usually around 10 days from when it was ordered.

Customization and Care:

Have a favorite sports team, or want to honor your own team? UnderArmour’s Performance Mouthwear can be customized with decals and/or colored bitepads. And UnderArmour Performance Mouthwear is as tough as you are — for most folks, one mouthguard or mouthpiece will last an entire season, assuming you don’t chew on it or have some sort of drastic changes to your teeth or jaw in the interim.

Cleaning UnderArmour Performance:
Mouthwear is easy and can be done with the same products you use to clean your teeth. Ask your hygienist or Island Dental Health Centre for additional information about the best way to keep your Performance Mouthwear clean.
